One of the most well-known cities in the world, New York City (commonly known as “The Big Apple,” or simply “NYC”) is the most populous city in the United States, with a population of approximately 8.4 million people throughout the five boroughs. New York is known a “cultural melting pot,” as its inhabitants are among the most diverse in the world, reflected by estimates that as many as 800 languages are spoken in New York. Areas and landmarks of NYC recognized worldwide include The Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and Wall Street, just to name a few. The New York Stock Exchange is the world’s largest stock exchange, which contributes to New York’s designation as one of three “command centers” for the world economy (in addition to London and Tokyo.) The real estate market in Manhattan is known worldwide as one of the most esteemed and valuable markets in the world, resulting in Manhattan properties being highly sought after for their characteristically high appreciating value over time. New York’s real estate market is characterized by a large amount of high-rise condominium and co-operative apartment buildings, and accounts for approximately 10% of all condos and co-ops nationwide. The total value of all New York City property was a staggering $802.4 billion in 2006.
